NUM welcomes SA’s quarterly safety report move (Mining Weekly)
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Tuesday welcomed a new Department of Mineral Resources initiative to ensure safety compliance at mines, but also called on the department to be even more proactive in its approach.  Last week the department’s online mineral rights application system, in terms of which companies would be compelled to produce safety reports on a quarterly basis, was launched.

Anglo offers to fund workers’ treatment (Business Day p2)
Anglo American, whose South African subsidiary is being sued by ill workers, has offered to pay for the medical treatment of claimants proven to have silicosis, although it does not concede any liability.  The case, which is likely to come before the High Court next year, involves 18 workers who claim they contracted silicosis at the President Steyn Gold Mine when it was owned by Anglo American SA.

Die uitjou van ’n opposisiepartyverteenwoordiger wat tydens vandag se Vryheidsdagvieringe in Pretoria plaasgevind het, is ’n voorbeeld van die ANC se wanpersepsie van die konsepte van vryheid en demokrasie.

ANC appeals to Samwu to reconsider strike plans (M&G)
The African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday appealed to the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) to reconsider plans for a second strike in May, which it says will have negative effects on the forthcoming local government elections.  The wage disparity claims of Pikitup employees, whose two-week long strike was suspended last Thursday, have still to be addressed and Samwu has warned of the possibility of a second strike if they are not resolved.  Moreover, Cosatu has warned about a secondary strike by Samwu members in the region and throughout Gauteng.

Numsa plans embassy protest (Business Day p2)
The National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) is to stage a protest outside the Japanese embassy over tyre company Bridgestone’s alleged decision to lock staff out of its Port Elizabeth and Brits plants without pay for two months.  The union says the workers have been punished because of the tsunami.

AfriForum gaan voort met hofstryd teen Malema

 

AfriForum gaan volstoom voort met sy haatspraak-hofsaak teen Julius Malema en sal nie afsien van die standpunt dat Malema se gebruik van die “Skiet die Boer”-slagspreuk haatspraak is nie.  Die ANC en Malema se skielike oproep tot dialoog is ’n skynheilige poging om hulleself as billik en versoenend aan die hof voor te hou.  AfriForum Jeug se pogings om met Malema hieroor te praat is met arrogansie en dreigemente begroet.  Verder het die ANC op geen stadium in die verlede aangedui dat hulle met AfriForum hieroor in gesprek wil tree nie.  In hierdie omstandighede is AfriForum van mening dat die Gelykheidshof die beste forum is om uitspraak in hierdie aangeleentheid te gee.

AfriForum het sterk saak teen Malema

Die burgerregte-inisiatief AfriForum is vol vertroue dat hulle ‘n baie sterk saak in die Suid-Gautengse hooggeregshof (sittend as die gelykheidshof) teen Julius Malema gestel het, veral in die lig van die erkennings wat Malema tydens sy kruisondervraging die afgelope twee dae gemaak het.

March CPI at 9-month high on food (Reuters)
South Africa’s headline consumer inflation (CPI) accelerated more than expected to a nine-month high of 4.1% in March, mainly driven by higher food prices.  The rate was 3.7% year-on-year in February.

Pikitup strike ends (Moneyweb)
The three-week long strike by Pikitup refuse collectors in Johannesburg has ended, with proposals having been signed and sealed early this morning after 17 hours of marathon negotiations.  Operations are expected to return to normal by next Tuesday.
